Mexico

I lived in Zacatecas, Mexico for four years when I was in my early 30's. Zacatecas is not a popular Foreign tourist's stop. I can't remember why my husband and I decided to go there in the first place. I think we wanted to see a Colonial city that was off the beaten path.

Our first visit to Zacatecas was during our month long tour of Mexico when I was in my early-20's. This city is the capital of the State by the same name. If I recall correctly, Zacatecas is the name of a tall grass that grows in that area. The city is located at an altitude of 8000 feet, so summers are hot but dry.... Just perfect for me. I have never been able to adjust to Japan's hot and humid summers.

Zacatecas is a colonial, hilly city with a rich history in silver mining. The center of the city has stone-paved roads and beautiful colonial buildings. Since it is the capital and also has a University, there are many festivities throughout the year. I loved living there when we did. In the last several years, it has grown wildly in business and population. The center of the city is not so quiet anymore but still beautiful to look at if you ever want to visit.

Zacatecas has some beautiful blue skies and sunsets. I completed a couple of oil paintings while living in our first rented house. I gave up on painting with oils because I can't stand the turpentine or all the clean-up that is involved.

My Grandfathers and my paternal Grandmother are from Mexico. That has always fueled my curiosity in Mexico.

Halloween is coming up. I am not sure how many cultures have a similar custom. I imagine most cultures honor the Deceased in some way. In Mexico, it is Dia de los Muertos on November 2nd. In Japan, it is Obon in August.

When I moved to Texas, I knew nothing of the Mexican culture and more specifically about the Day of the Dead until we visited San Antonio and really got to understand what it all meant...Is that one of your beautiful paintings??

Hi Neda,

It is one of the few oil paintings that I have done. I have family in Texas but have never been.

Blue-eyed Siamese Cat flies to Japan

Today was filled with my art and time with Sputnik. She was bathing herself which gave me the chance to catch a photo of her. I actually adopted Sputnik as a kitten in 1998 when I was living in Mexico. She made the long trip with me to Japan on July 25, 2004. It took me about 6 months to plan the logistics of bringing her from Mexico to Japan. Since I had to fly via the U.S. on Mexicana Airlines and Korean Airlines, that meant 4 countries and two airlines would need to approve her transport. There were many details to keep track of for each country and airline. After 6 months of stressful planning, 16 hours of two airline flights and layovers, She made it to Japan safely! Korean Air allowed her to fly with me as my carry-on luggage, which was a relief for me. No worrying about whether she was scared or left at the Los Angeles airport! I didn't give her any tranquilizer to sedate her. Yet, she was quiet the entire flight and went unnoticed by other passengers. I h
