Sendai Garbage and Flying Hair

Wow, where did the week go? I thought I would get at least one post in between shadow shots, but here it is Sunday already!

The Sendai Mayor decided that we need to reduce the city's trash output, so he changed the type of garbage bags we use and raised the prices on the garbage bags as well. What's the connection? Hmmm .... I am not sure yet. In order to use all my old garbage bags, I am double bagging the trash. Old bag is covered by new bag, so there is no reduction in waste or eco-friendliness yet. The City ordinances are stricter now: your trash will not be picked up if it is not in the city-designated bag. It costs about $3.80 USD for 10 official bags.

I have tried to reduce the plastic and paper that I receive from shopping. If I buy something, it is usually wrapped three times! For example, if I buy a take-out lunch, it is put in a plastic container and wrapped with saran wrap and then wrapped in paper and then put in a plastic bag. It is the custom to wrap everything at least twice. In the coming weeks I will try to bag my own lunch rather than buy it. That will be more eco-friendly and keep my wallet fatter. I try to carry my own shopping bag and ask to have it without the extra wrappings.

When I was in California recently, my sister took me and my Mother up to see my father's grave in Santa Nella. The area is beautiful. There is a lookout point that towers over the cemetary. It was pleasantly windy up there. My Sis shot my hair while it was trying to fly away.

That's quite an interesting approach to reducing the trash. I guess he's thinking if bags cost that much people won't want to use many of them!? Hopefully people won't start dumping on the sides of the roads in protest!
Love the hair shot!

That's a great fly-away hair shot! Such a fun photo! I love your description of it being 'pleasantly' windy. It looks almost cyclonic to me! I was interested to read about waste reduction in your part of the world. A few of the larger chain stores over here have started charging for plastic bags. The supermakets haven't started yet but I'm sure they will soon enough. I agree it's difficult to avoid all the plastic when people insist on wrapping things with mountains of the stuff. I like your idea of taking your own lunch to work. And the fatter wallet sounds like a good bonus :)
What a great shot - looks like you were having fun!

Great blog! Love the photo! :)
3.80 for 10 bags! That's insane. But a darn effective way of reducing trash! I think it's almost impossible for people to accept this policy if it's implemented here (Singapore) because very few people cultivate the habit of reduce, recycling... and it doesn't help that we are one of the biggest throwers of used plastics in the world. And thankies, I've added your blog too =)

Blue-eyed Siamese Cat flies to Japan

Today was filled with my art and time with Sputnik. She was bathing herself which gave me the chance to catch a photo of her. I actually adopted Sputnik as a kitten in 1998 when I was living in Mexico. She made the long trip with me to Japan on July 25, 2004. It took me about 6 months to plan the logistics of bringing her from Mexico to Japan. Since I had to fly via the U.S. on Mexicana Airlines and Korean Airlines, that meant 4 countries and two airlines would need to approve her transport. There were many details to keep track of for each country and airline. After 6 months of stressful planning, 16 hours of two airline flights and layovers, She made it to Japan safely! Korean Air allowed her to fly with me as my carry-on luggage, which was a relief for me. No worrying about whether she was scared or left at the Los Angeles airport! I didn't give her any tranquilizer to sedate her. Yet, she was quiet the entire flight and went unnoticed by other passengers. I h
