wonderful. i read your comment. it is a tree. i should have just googled manzanita. never heard of it. and yes i am on the east coast of australia, hence the reference to celsius. thank you for getting back to me. appreciated.

Many of you have figured it out already that the photo is the peeling bark of a manzanita tree. The manzanita are common in the California foothills.
