Lately I've been getting rid of all the excess sites and emails that I have.  I got rid of my kaboodle, pinterest and twitter accounts.  I don't need to know what's on sale at World Market or other commercial sites where I shop, so I unsubscribed to their emails.

My husband and I have continued our Sunday hikes in the foothills.  These long walks and foothill treks give my spirit time to withdraw, repair and gain energy and focus.

I had different words that came to mind as a title for this post: haze, dormant, molting, tea leaves, focus.
All of them yet none of them seemed to fit.

I really love doing these line drawing portraits with the varied hairstyles.  I never really know how the pattern will turn out until I've already begun.  I draw the "joints" of the hairstyle first and then develop the connecting lines as I go.


For this female portrait, I also added pieces of rice paper that I had painted with watercolor for her hair accent.

This pen abstract illustration came together from two separate sketches: The first doodle was with  the rectangles and circles, and the cellular-like doodle was done on a different day.

We skipped all of that and headed up to the local man-made lake to hike the trails that meander through the foothills.  It was a gorgeous day and we spent 3 hours out there.  Can you spot our shadows in the first photo?

I finally got a hummingbird feeder hanging just outside my window.

I knew about the hum of their wings as I'd had one hover near me once as I was standing near a hanging nasturtium.   However, I never knew they made a clicking sound as well.

I'm so behind on getting new works online.   The painting above is from Spring 2010, and I still need to put the backing on the rice paper. 

I used watercolors for the carp's body and background.   Using a traditional sumi-e brush, I drew the scales and koi with sumi ink.

Albert Schweitzer, who was left-handed, sometimes wrote prescriptions with his right hand, so as not to disturb his cat, Sizi, who liked to fall asleep on his left arm.   He once said,

My sweet Sputnik was with me for nearly 14 years. I completed two quick sketches of Sputnik based on a video that I took of her.  I then scanned those images and edited them in gimp.  I used imovie to stitch the images together and add music.

I've been busy working on a custom collage these past couple of weeks.  Just a few more details and then the final varnish, and it'll be finished.

There was quite a crowd which meant long lines for checking out books.  The Art House staff were well prepared, organized and patient. The tugboat was not open for tour but here's my shot of it sporting it's shadow and Alcatraz in the background.

My husband and I haven't taken a get-away weekend in years.  My sister took care of my cat while we headed up to San Francisco last weekend.  I loved our hotel room which was near the water and had a beautiful view of the bay bridge.

The one in the photo below is good for drawing although not one I'd use.

My sister brightened my day when I saw her latest addition to her shoe collection.  These would make going anywhere fun. 

May has given us lots of rain and beautiful, Spring days. My husband's garden has given us plenty of salad greens to eat. My second sketch for the sketchbook project 2012.  We all have reasons for keeping things and my Mother has kept these 4-inch houses on the windowsill for years.  I used black pen and colored pens.  There are actually only 3 houses, so I used gimp to stitch my line drawing, the colored drawing and and inverted drawing altogether.

Patchouli Essential Oil Perfume
A bit of colorful and dark shadows today.

Smell:
I recently bought a dark patchouli essential oil perfume which has a rich, spicy and earthy scent. Patchouli is supposed to lift the mood and reduce mental fatigue.  That's why I originally got interested in this scent, but now I'm just addicted to how it smells.

My neighbor has a beautiful, grey, tom cat. Our front and back yards are part of his territory, so he often makes himself at home in our yard. He was the inspiration for Pangur Bán III. Being of Mexican heritage I love anything and everything hot.  My favorite pickled chilies are locally grown and bottled in California. They are tangy and hot.  I usually have 3 -5 of them with tacos or tostadas. 

What do chilies have to do with Zumba?  It's another form of salsa:)  My sister introduced me to the salsa-based workout. The other day my cat, Sputnik, was lying on the bed curled up for her nap.  As I was hovering around her with my camera, she looked up.   I turned the photo I got of her into a black and white stencil photo  and used it as a spring board for my latest cat portrait series,  Pangur Ban, on etsy.

Working out ideas for Gloaming

While waiting with my Mother for one of her appointments, I worked out ideas for the last piece in my "Death, Birth and Identity" series.   I was trying to figure out what other elements to include and how to marry the figure at the top with those elements on the canvas.

The big news all day last Friday was that we might get a rare snowfall between 4 and 6 a.m.  I happened to get up at 3 a.m. and looked out the window.  The sky was clear and beautiful.   I woke up on Saturday to an amazing blue sky, white cotton clouds and sunshine.

I haven't settled on any project yet, so I spent the week just playing with my pencils and paper.

These daffodils always bring sunshine to my spirit when they bloom.  They haven't all bloomed yet.  Only one bunch.  They are a radiant bunch when they're all in full bloom.

I am continuing with my theme of hands.  I spent the week drawing hands and have a sore wrist and hand to take care of at the moment.  Yesterday I stayed away from my laptop and didn't do any drawing or painting.

These flowers were as tall as me.  We'd taken a dirt road into the fields near the bike trail where we ride. I just thought they were so pretty with their muted, earthy colors.

6th grade was the first time I used sumi ink for a school art project.  I instantly fell in love with how it flowed on the paper.  

For the above line drawing, I used a sumi brush to draw the lines with sumi ink on watercolor paper.  This is the beginning of Constellation X.  I'll be adding collage and pencil to complete the work.

I have doubts here and there on whether I'll be able to create something every day.  Questions on what will happen when life gets too busy.   It's not a group project, so no one but myself is imposing this resolution on me.

That is my 2011 new year resolution:  start and finish one art piece a day.   Only 7 days into the new year and I'm doing well so far. 

Some things I've learned have surprised me.  

1.  Even though I had been doing art most days in 2010, I hadn't been finishing something everyday.

The "Oak and Linden" pen drawing is inspired by the story of Baucis and Philemon who wished to be oak and linden trees intertwined upon their death.   

The Process

I wrote the poem in 1999.  The sketch was done this past summer in 2010.  They both seemed to fit well together so I've married them here in my sketchbook.

A while back my husband ran across a box of engraving letters.  They must have been my Father's.  I love this little set and used them to initial my painting that I adhered to this moleskin notebook.

I know I am not the only one who needs to burn off stress from time to time. 

In a 2009 Forbes article, Dr. Joseph W. Stubbs recommended "lifestyle changes such as getting a good night's sleep, eating well and exercising."

Lately, stress had been building up without me realizing it.  That led to having nightmares again, which led to many sleep-deprived nights.
