Small Notebook - Asian Theme

It wasn't until coming to Japan that I learned about Haiku and Japanese Proverbs. I have chosen my favorite proverbs for these notebooks. Copyright © 2007 Juana Almaguer This is my newest listing at my Etsy shop. I have taken some painted rice paper and glued this to the book cover. The background was painted on fibrous rice paper. Hints of the texture are visible. I used a Caligraphy brush to paint the Japanese proverb with Sumi Ink over the background. This small notebook can be used for note taking and will fit easily in a pocket. Pages inside are off-white, unlined and perforated for easy removal. The front cover has been sealed with a gloss varnish for extra protection . Translation of Proverb: "au no wa wakari no hajimari" = Parting begins when we meet. This Proverb expresses the Buddhist idea that life is transient. Copyright © 2007 Juana Almaguer The above notebook's background was painted on fibrous rice paper. Hints of the texture are visible. Male Portrait in Blue and Ochre

Inches: about 11H x 8W Centimeters: 33H x 24W I have listed this in my Gallery Juana Etsy shop. This portrait is done on rice paper with chinese watercolors and ink. This particular type of rice paper is thin but does not absorb much water, so the strokes remain bold and vibrant. The painting has been mounted on thicker rice paper. I have included close-ups. My hanko (signature stamp) will be on the lower left. All Copyrights © (including reproduction) remain with the Artist- Juana Almaguer. This will be shipped flat by insured mail.

Notebook- Altered cover with original painting of a cat (red background)

I finished this piece today and listed it in my Etsy shop. The notebook's original cover was of a fibrous, beige rice paper. I took my own ink/watercolor painting of a cat and glued this to the original book cover. I painted around the cat with Quinacridone Red Acrylic. I covered the inside flaps with a leaf patterned rice paper then painted over that with Quinacridone Red Acrylic. The cat painting was done on rice paper which allows hints of the texture of the original cover to come through. This small notebook can be used as a journal or for note taking. Pages inside are off-white. My hanko (signature stamp) is in the upper corner on the inside of the book. The outside cover has been sealed with a gloss varnish for extra protection. The cover is an Original Painting. Copyright © 2007 Juana Almaguer Centimeters 10.5 W x 10 H Inches about 3.5 x 3.5 40 blank pages inside

My Art listed in my Etsy shop

http://www.galleryjuana.etsy.com/ Art by Juana Almaguer I learned Chinese Ink Painting when I lived in Sapporo, on the island of Hokkaido in Japan. I was lucky to have gotten a very patient and kind teacher. I have been painting watercolors on rice paper in my own style ever since 1997. I use the following materials in my mixed media paintings: Rice Paper (washi), Chinese watercolors, ink, acrylics, gouache and western watercolors. My paintings are done on rice paper which are then glued on to a thicker sheet of rice paper. The notebook's original cover was of a fibrous, beige rice paper. I took my own ink/watercolor painting of a cat and glued this to the original book cover. I covered the inside flaps with a red and gold filigree rice paper. The cat painting was done on transparent rice paper which allows hints of the texture and color of the original cover to come through. The ink line drawing is based on a drawing of my cat.

Young Man - Painting on Rice Paper

ink, chinese watercolor on rice paper 32.5 cm H x 24 cm W Copyright © 2007 Juana Almaguer I am back to portraits again. This is the motif I am working on now. I drew the drawing last year and did the painting shortly after that. I am trying to get more of these done as I love the pose. The brush strokes used are also quick and as few as possible ... similar to traditional chinese ink painting. The space and color are important as well. There is the Japanese "Notan" effect: a balance between lighter shades placed next to darker shades. Additionally, there is a balance of painted space and unpainted space.

Suibokuga- Bamboo

rice paper mounted on Japanese matboard 185 mm h x 63 mm w Lately, I have been interested in doing Chinese Ink Painting again. For the past several years, I have been doing mostly figures on rice paper. Last night, I couldn't sleep, so I got up and decided to paint. I found a sheet of locally handmade rice paper that I had purchased some time back. Being in Japan, I can walk into any art store or stationary store and buy rice paper, but you have to drive out into the country and buy direct from the Paper Maker. I don't have a car, so whenever there is a traditional crafts show downtown, I am definitely there. Handmade paper is usually thicker, and I love the feel of it. The paint flows differently depending on which artisan made the paper, giving each painting a different effect. I painted bamboo last night. When I started my studies of this art in Sapporo, Japan (years ago), bamboo was the first subject that I learned to paint. There are four main motifs that must be learne
