Hummingbirds

I finally got a hummingbird feeder hanging just outside my window.

I knew about the hum of their wings as I'd had one hover near me once as I was standing near a hanging nasturtium.   However, I never knew they made a clicking sound as well.

The temperatures dropped this past weekend, so I haven't seen them as often in the past couple of days. I got these photos last week while sitting at my desk and looking through the open window.   The hummingbird in the lemon tree really gives me a sense of their size.

I also found this homemade nectar recipe on the Smithsonian National Zoo park site.

Directions for making safe hummingbird food:
1. Mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water and bring to a boil to kill any bacteria or mold present.
2. Cool and fill feeder.
3. Extra sugar water may be stored in a refrigerator.
4. Red dye should not be added.

Adding this to HeyHarriet's Shadow Shot Sunday.

They are quite something to watch, especially the speed at which their wings are fluttering! I envy you your lemon tree (mine didn't survive the hard freeze last winter).

I just love humming birds. I haven't seen one in quite some time but I remember my grandma having feeders hanging around so we always saw them out the kitchen window!

The silhouette looks so nice, as if it were charcoal used on graph paper. A gallery would make a fine setting for this. We don't have citrus trees up here, to cold in the winter. The little fellow seems content to hang around. Neat!

I guess the hummingbirds do not like me. I put out a feeder, but all I got was ants.

great pic! my hummingbird feeder is waiting to be cleaned and rehung. Anna's hummingbird overwinters here. As well as boiling the sugar water a friend who is mad about hummingbirds told me you need to clean the feeder really well or they can get sick and die from mold and bacteria. I'm going to use boiling water from the kettle, I think.

A hummingbird, what a rare and special joy! We don't have them here, so I think they are magical creatures. LOVE you photo of the bird/shadow & screen, the bold graphic of it. You have a lemon tree...mmm... Happy Week, Juana :o) ((HUGS))
